The tribal people of Arunachal Pradesh, particularly the Nyishi tribe, have a unique and culturally significant use for the hornbill head. They traditionally create elaborate headgear called "podum," which is a woven cane cap adorned with the upper beak and casque of the great hornbill, along with the tail feathers of other birds. This headgear is worn by men during various ceremonies and rituals, symbolizing their connection to nature and their respect for the hornbill, which is considered a sacred bird. In recent times, due to conservation efforts, artificial beaks made of fiberglass are often used instead of real hornbill beaks to protect these magnificent birds.
